should i buy Z-Line Claremont Desk reviews

This desk is even more attractive in person than it is online! The top is smoke colored glass (seems darker to me than the online picture shows) and all the metal pieces have a nice weight and finish to them. The desk arrived well-protected with no damage/defects and no missing parts. Assembly instructions are clear and concise with all parts clearly labeled. Once assembled, the desk seems solid.
This is a nice desk for under $200 compared with what is available at local retailers for a similar price. Highly recommend! I bought this desk for my home office and I must say that I love it. I considered a number of different desks. The first thing that I like about it is that the glass top screws securely to the desk frame. Other desks that I've looked at only have suctions cups to secure the glass top. The glass top is also a smokey color. Which is great. The only thing that I wish was different is that the wood legs were on the front and back. As in the picture, you can see the wood legs. But, when you turn and look at it from the back, you see the black metal legs. It isn't a huge deal, just aesthetic preference.

Assembly wasn't too bad. I put it together by myself in under an hour. The only complaint is that it is difficult to secure the keyboard tray to the frame tightly. Maybe it's just because I'm not mechanically inclined. But, I was able to get it secure enough for my use.

Overall, this was a great purchase and I would highly recommend it! This is a good desk. It was relatively easy to assemble, but some parts didn't line up perfectly. Nothing a little pushing didn't fix. The glass was sturdy with no chips. Instructions were very good with well-labeled parts.

The keyboard tray doesn't roll very easily, and it was stuck when I first got it. After the first couple of weeks of use, though, the rolling mechanism has smoothed out to an acceptable point.

It's very attractive with good quality parts. The two wood beams and wood back are real wood, not laminate.

All in all, everything works, looks good, and is of high quality. Other than that, it's a desk. What more do you expect of it?

P.S. Strangely, a card showing off Z-Line's sponsored 2008 Nascar season was inside. The desk was manufactured in August, 2009. That means that when the desk was made, the card was already over a year out of date. Why the hell did they put it in? You do get what you pay for! The production date for my desk was June 2012. Everything was packaged snugly and nothing was missing. Putting it together took me a good 2 hours. They even give you the tools such as Allen wrench and screwdrivers. Quality of wood is excellent. A very solid table. I love the dark glass desk. Gives off a svelte modern look. Generous work space too!I paired this desk with  Gorgeous! My first legit desk (been using dinner table as desk) and lamp. All the pictures you see online for this thing look a good deal better than it actually looks in person. It's hard to explain... It's just that, seeing it in the room and sitting behing it, it seems a little... well, cheap.

Also, it's also a little rickety. On mine, no matter how I tweaked the screws (I'm very mechanically inclined and I know what I'm doing), the whole frame was twisted a bit so that one leg lifts off the floor a little. So much so that the little adjustable foot which comes with isn't long enough to touch the floor, and I had to buy one that's longer to actually make up the distance. The keyboard tray is also a little flimsy and vibrates as I type (I type heavily, I will admit).

I'm actually comparing this to the Brenton Merido desk (which seems to go under the Z-Lines brand too?) that my wife purchased at a local big-box store. It was less money, looks very similar, and both feels sturdier and looks more refined/polished than this. It should be a consideration if you're looking at this (though it is smaller in width).

Speaking of the keyboard tray, make sure you don't need a lot of space. I use a stationary thumb-ball mouse and rather narrow keyboard and have no width issues (but I *do* have 1 issue... read below), but the tray is only about 25" or so, so you better measure before you buy.

Also, if you have any sort of special or special-needs keyboards that are taller than a typical key board, you will have problems. For example, I have a kensington split keyboard which sits about 3.5 inches high in the middle and is a little longer front-to-back than, say, a Microsoft Natural keyboard. This is a probelm for 2 reasons; there's a bar that sits over the keyboard tray, and the key board hits it. Also, the tray doesn't extend out far enough, so the front of the keyboard actually hangs over about half an inch.... and I can't push it in without fighting with the keyboard. If you, say, have one of those Kensington concave keyboards, I really don't think it will fit on the tray or go under the bar (though, I'm not 100% positive... measure!).

So, for the money, there is at least one other desk to consider. In the end, I'm not so disappointed that I will give it up. Just wish it were a little better. There are so many reviews on this desk that were very accurate in their statements. The pluses is it looks very up to date, is compact and it will fit my needs. The two issues that others were right about was the facts that the instructions were sorely lacking and the keyboard/mouse drawer is too small. I knew by the pictures on line I could put it together properly as long as all the parts were there and they were constructed properly, which they were. On the size of the keyboard/mouse drawer, that was a case of pure economics as the only other desk that had the proper size, looks and larger drawer was some $60-$80 more. So I decided that the larger drawer was not worth that much too me. But the instructions and the undersize drawer width was worth a one star reduction. Thank you Amazon for making the desk available and publishing reviews so we know what we are getting into before it reaches our front doors. Just my opinion.Assembly was easy and took me under an hour. The desk is solid - the main surface (which is darker than in the stock photo) has handled usual roughness just fine. The freight shipping package was a little beat-up, but everything was shiny and most everything was accounted for (was missing an extra nut).

The dust collects and collects. To dust I have to move everything off the desk, which is every couple of days. Otherwise it's like an itch, staring at me throughout the day - peppering the reflected sunlight and the birds flying outside. Then, if your hands are as oily as a typical person's, you leave smudges every time the side of your hand rests on the desk (which is much more often than you might expect).

Other then that, it's been a great experience. I keep the keyboard tray tucked away and use it as a makeshift drawer. I have had this desk for about 8 months, and I really like the look of it, but the one thing that absolutely drives me crazy is that the keyboard tray is way too small. It barely fits a standard sized keyboard and a mouse. I have to tuck the side of the mousepad underneath the keyboard just to make it fit. I give this desk a 5-star rating. Best computer desk I've ever owned. Plus, it gets compliments from the ladies on a regular basis. Bonus!

Pros:

- Packaged well. Glass is very protected and all pieces were covered and protected individually. No scratches or dents.

- Extremely easy to put together. All pieces are labeled with letters and numbers which are clearly written out and shown in the pictures. Each screw has it's own individually labeled bag, so you don't have to rummage through one bag trying to match with a picture. Allen wrenches and phillips/flathead screwdrivers included. Extra screws included in a red bag, just in case. Pieces lined up EXACTLY like they are supposed to, which is rare in the world of computer desks. Took a little under an hour from start to finish. Regardless, some people will have trouble putting ANYTHING together.

- Looks amazing and seriously classes-up my living room compared to my old, boring, Ikea computer desk.

- Solid construction, feels like a much more expensive desk

- Plenty of leg room underneath (even more if you choose to not connect the keyboard tray)

"Possible" Cons:

- Keyboard tray can't really be used with both keyboard AND mouse comfortably. I personally never use a keyboard tray anyway since I game a lot and it has just never felt right for that purpose. If you type a lot and don't play games, it's great. You can leave it off if you like as well. I personally use it for storing things that would otherwise clutter the top of my desk.

- Glass top shows everything. If you don't clean often, stick with wood. Also, I suggest using a keyboard with a wristpad if you want to avoid palm smudges, even with the keyboard tray since it's glossy and shows smudges easily. I am pleased to write that I am very content with the quality of this desk. The surface area is large enough to accommodate a large computer tower (Raven 2) and a 23" to 27" monitor with separate speakers. It's very attractive, well designed, and the instructions are well laid out. No flaws were noticed during the assembly. Highly recommended.
